Give Your Children the Tools to Be Great

Every parent wants to see their child succeed — not just in sports, but in life. Over the years, I’ve had countless parents tell me, “I just want to give my son or daughter the tools to be successful.”

Every time I hear those words, I can’t help but get excited. Because that mindset — when both the athlete and the parent are invested — creates the perfect foundation for growth. When parents lock in to the process, it doesn’t just make the coach’s job easier; it builds consistency, accountability, and confidence in the athlete.

So what does it really mean to “give kids the tools to be successful”? Success in sports performance — and in life — isn’t about one single factor. It’s about developing habits, character, and physical ability that all work together. While there are many ways to support young athletes, three key pillars stand out:

1. Build Athleticism, Not Just Skill

It’s easy to focus on sport-specific drills — throwing, shooting, dribbling, or hitting. But the truth is, athleticism is what unlocks skill.

Developing speed, strength, coordination, and balance lays the foundation for success in any sport. You’ve probably heard the phrase “Speed kills.” And it’s true — speed changes games. Building athleticism doesn’t just help an athlete perform better in their chosen sport; it gives them the versatility and confidence to adapt to any challenge that comes their way.

2. Prioritize Recovery

Here’s a common misconception: many athletes believe they get stronger or faster during training. In reality, training is where we break the body down — recovery is where we grow.

Without proper rest, hydration, and sleep, the body never fully adapts to the work being done. Over time, that can lead to fatigue, plateaus, or even injury. Teaching young athletes to value recovery — stretching, sleeping well, and taking care of their bodies — sets them apart from the competition.

3. Focus on Nutrition

Performance starts from the inside out. Nutrition fuels every sprint, jump, and lift an athlete does.

Think of it like a car — even the best engine won’t run without fuel. The right balance of protein, carbohydrates, and hydration provides the energy athletes need to perform and recover effectively. Educating young athletes on proper nutrition gives them lifelong habits that support health, confidence, and success.
